The Protector

There are two strictly niche movies opening today, but a third one stands out because of quality and the good buzz it’s been gathering. Besides, Ben Affleck is back!
The Covenant (2006)

Four young students in the Ipswich Colony were born with special powers because of their ancient bloodline, so when a student is found dead at their Academy secrets begin to unravel. Starring Steven Strait, Sebastian Stan, Laura Ramsey, Taylor Kitsch and Toby Hemingway. Directed by Renny Harlin.
Hollywoodland (2006)

The unexpected death of actor George Reeves (Ben Affleck) prompted an investigator (Adrien Brody) to get to the bottom of it: was it murder or suicide? Also starring Diane Lane and Bob Hoskins. Directed by Allen Coulter.
The Protector (2005)

Kham’s two beloved elephants are stolen from him by an international mafia, so he embarks on a quest to get them back. Starring Tony Jaa, Petchthai Wongkamlao and Bongkot Kongmalai. Directed by Prachya Pinkaew.

Great action movie. Very good fight scenes. The lead actor is a combination of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan but looks remarkably like Sabu. I’m sure we’ll see more of this actor in the future, however the editor/distributor of this movie should have been one of our heroes victims. This film has been chopped up so badly that actors just disappear and we are left to assume their fate. The films running joke about the elephants is pretty cool, but alas it has your standard

martial arts villains, crooked cops and a Mata Hari like figure who has some very exotic tastes in men and whips.
I would have liked to see the movie in its original version. All in all it was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
